Many people like going fishing for different reasons. Some just take up this hobby for relaxation whereas others do it also for the entertainment and joy of actually catching fish. In the case of the latter group for whom the result is also important, the fishermen will probably want the right fishing equipment to ensure the success of their enterprise.

It is true and proved in time by the testimonies of thousands of expert fishermen that the equipment varies depending on a wide variety of factors, among which the fish species is an important one. Thus, in the case of trout fishing, because trout is what we are going to discuss, you will need typical tackle and certain types of lures. Even when fishing for the same species, you may have to use different types of trout fishing lures because of the different environments inhabited by this fresh water fish.

Best Deals On Fly Reels

There are several types of trout fishing lures for the rainbow subspecies that is preferred by many fisherman. Thus, we can divide the fishing lures into three or four groups such as trout spinners, trout baits, and trout flies.

Let’s consider bait trout fishing lures first. Trout bait may consist of live nightcrawlers, bread or dough. Other pieces of food can be put into the hook, and they are most often improvisations. Another group of trout fishing lures is represented by trout jigs which are most effective in deep waters. The jigs are very small and their bodies can be made of either hair/feather or soft plastic. The main disadvantage if these trout fishing lures is that when using them frequent snags may occur because of logs, rocks or over-hanging branches.

The other two groups of trout fishing lures are trout flies and trout spinners. In the case of flies you can use almost any type of insect you can find near the fishing area but dry flies, wet flies, nymphs and streamers are even better solutions. Matching the hatch is the only requirement for the use of flies as fishing trout lures. Last but not least, spinners make another viable option. Read recommendations if you are not sure whether they are good for trout or not, because quality equipment items also include some usage instructions too.

By: Harry Liddic

My good friend Will and I took his boat out of Eureka, CA in search of albacore. His boat is not the biggest at 22’ but certainly the fastest. Before we deadheaded to the albacore fishery some twenty miles offshore, he dropped a crab pot on the shelf just off shore from Eureka. At about 100’ down it might provide a consolation prize to this fish story, if we didn’t run into any albacore. The trip out took forty-five minutes and was uneventful.

Once we reached the albacore feeding ground, we made our choices one what feathers to use. I choose a Williamson four-ounce purple and black tuna feather with a Daisy chain of smaller but similar feathers meant to imitate a school of fish. I thought that it was still dark enough to use the darker colors. I could go brighter later. Will put on his special pattern a lime green with blue and yellow feather that should certainly be seen from a distance. We attached the line to the downrigger and went down 80’. It was an El Nina year and we thought that the thermacline was a little shallower this year.

It was slow at first and it was getting brighter and I was picking through the feathers trying to decide what to change to when Will yelled, “Strike”. I looked up to see it was my pole. I spilled the feathers on the deck in a heap getting to my pole. As I pick it out of the rod holder, I could tell it wasn’t a big one. But I was happy to break the ice and was happy be have a fish on. The albacore weighed 20 pounds and I was proud of my catch and knew it would grow in the fish tale.

Even though I had just caught one on a daisy chained Williamson purple and black, I switched to a bright blue feather with sections of red and white. Fishing it making the right decision at the right time. It was get lighter and a brighter feather would do better.

Will was about to lift the downrigger to re-attach my line when his line popped loose and his reel screamed. I brought the downrigger up to get it out of the way while Will’s Penn reel continued to give out line. Will took the rod from the holder, tighten the drag and set the hook as hard as could.

With the taste of steel in its mouth the albacore veered to the port side of the boat and thought about going deep but Will fought it back to the boat and we gaffed it. It weighed 55 pounds and was a good 4’ in length. We fished the afternoon and caught nothing. We headed back at 3:00 and check our crab pot on the way in. Six Dungeness crab awaited us. Coming back into harbor was a bit dicey. The waves had come up in the late afternoon. There are a lot of rocks around the port of Eureka and the fog doesn’t help. Getting past the breakwater is one of those things you decide to do and do it. Once you start there is no turning back. We negotiated it with only a couple of rollers washing over our stern.

My friend Bill and I were in Monterey, California for a conference on private label products for pharmacies. After the conference we decided to stay and extra day for some fishing. We got more than we bargained for because the skipper of a six-man boat had two openings. But the charter was for a half-day fishing and a half-day whale watching. The skipper had yellow waterproof overalls and rubber boots to go over our dress slacks and shoes and we both bought sweaters at the local department store making this a very dressy fishing tale.

The skipper headed out of the marina and went due south to some kelp beds over the Monterey rift outside the Monterey Bay Kelp Forest Sanctuary that is up to two miles deep. We began fishing with medium-to-light tackle having baited our hooks with squid.

The weighted squid were lowered about sixty feet into the kelp beds. Within minutes everyone was catching mainly California Kelp Bass which look a a lot like largemouth freshwater bass. They ran from three to four pounds and put up a good fight. One fisherman hooked a Leopard shark and was fighting it forty minutes and had it nearly boat side when the leader broke.

They say that the Monterey Sea canyon was the outlet for the Colorado River eons ago. That it started near Santa Barbara and has been moving northward with the San Andreas Fault all these years. The fish were plentiful and we caught tripletail, Cabezon, and one fisherman caught a twenty-three pound lingcod. Half the time we would catch a fish and hold it up for the skipper to identify.

By noon us six fishermen had a whole mess of fish in the live well, each in the appropriate burlap sack for each fisherman. Bill and I enjoyed the active fishing although we were use to fishing for bigger game fish. We enjoyed the lunch provided and looked forward to seeing some whales.

All the tackle was brought up and stowed and we were off to see the gray whales. There was hardly any swell at all and our anticipation was high. We didn’t travel that far and the skipper was scouting about with binoculars. Nothing happened for an hour and fifteen minutes when the skipper looking northward yelled out there was a pod coming our way. Cameras blossomed out like mushrooms after a rain. I couldn’t imagine where they had been keeping them. The skipper cut the engine and came down from the fly bridge. He asked Bill and I if we had cameras. We said no, and he gave us a couple of disposable cameras.

A whale blew is his blowhole not a hundred yards from the boat. The skipper said that would be the bull leading the way. He swam right up next to the boat as if to see who was on board. He was within fifteen yards and was enormous. His fluke that he slapped the water with seemed as big as the boat. He swam on and a cow followed a little further away. She rolled to her side and raised a fin. It was a humbling experience and so spellbinding that neither Bill or I thought to use the cameras the skipper have given us to our regret to this day.
